Battle of Ruona 1 September 1808

A week ago we played another game of Black Powder set in Finland in the summer of 1808. But for the first time, we now played a scenario based on a particular historical battle. Credit goes out to the Finnish guys behind this site: http://www.the-ancients.com/gemigabok/suomen-sota-1808-1809/battles-we-fought/ who conveniently gathered most of the details for this andContinue reading “Battle of Ruona 1 September 1808”

Swedish infantry king’s colors, model 1766

My latest effort in painting infantry flags for my 1808 Swedish army is a livfana (king’s colors) of the model 1766 type. As in other armies of the period (e.g. Russian, Prussian, etc), Swedish infantry battalions carried a white flag with royal emblem in the first battalion. The first company would carry the king’s colorsContinue reading “Swedish infantry king’s colors, model 1766”

Finnish dragoons

Updated this year-old post with some new pictures and a bit of background. I am also testing out taking images against a black background. The miniatures are Perry 28mms. These are the Nyland and Karelia dragoons, the only Finnish cavalry regiments still active in 1808. In the early 18th century, there were three full cavalryContinue reading “Finnish dragoons”

1808 projects…

Many reading this will already have seen these elsewhere, but I might as well post these pictures here as well. These are the figures I have painted and based so far on both sides (Russian and Swedish). It should be around 350 figures and counting. I dont know how realistic it is, but if IContinue reading “1808 projects…”

Swedish commander, 1808

Here’s another figure for the Finland 1808 setting. This guy is a slightly converted Foundry Napoleonic Austrian. I only removed a few small details, such as medals, and added others, such as the armband. The miniature is supposed to look like a Swedish general who commanded the 4th brigade at Oravais in september 1808 (lt.Continue reading “Swedish commander, 1808”

Finnish reserve battalion of 1808

I havent done much painting lately, but I managed to finish one more Finnish battalion. This one does not have a flag, which was the case with the reserve (vargering) and so-called rusthållsbataljoner. The latter were formed in the 18th century, when a number of Finnish cavalry regiments were disbanded and converted into infantry. TheContinue reading “Finnish reserve battalion of 1808”

Swedish/Finnish jägers

These are the first two figures of a small unit of jägers I am painting for my 1808 collection. These are primarily meant to represent the jägers of the Nyland and Björneborg regiments. Perry make a set of Nyland jägers with shakos, but as far as I know, only the Savolax jägers had shakos. AllContinue reading “Swedish/Finnish jägers”

More Finnish artillery

I just finished a couple of figures and a cannon which are painted as belonging to the Finnish artillery regiment. The figures are Perry Austrian artillerymen with Swedish heads. The gun is a Hessians AWI piece. The gun, a 4-pdr, is called “Swedish”, but it was really a French gun which was similar to theContinue reading “More Finnish artillery”

Barefoot soldiers

In an effort to make my napoleonic Finnish infantry look more realistic, I tried to make a barefoot soldier. I used the lower legs and feet of a set of barefoot Madras sepoys made by Perry. The poses on these happen to be very similar (identical in fact) to the Swedish infantry by the sameContinue reading “Barefoot soldiers”
